Teaching personal development skills can be quite rewarding, but it can also pose challenges. Whether it be in a work relationship, acting as a coach to a friend or helping out a member of your own family, teaching someone valuable life skills and helping them to implement them provides both personal satisfaction and enhanced opportunities for the other person. Taking this step can even lead to personal growth for you as the coach.

When teaching personal development skills, you must first define your role as a mentor or coach. Being a coach or mentor does not mean taking action for the other person, rather it means helping them to gain their own skill set and begin to implement those skills. If you simply take action for the other person or tell that person what to do, you will not teach them the skills they need in order to be successful. Your role should involve a lot of listening and feedback, but the person being taught should do most of the work.

When helping another person to grow, there are many different strategies that can be used. Some individuals learn best through simple conversation. This helps to spark their imagination and gets their creative juices flowing. Other individuals learn through action, and they might benefit from a planned activity, such as completing a wilderness obstacle course or joining a team for sports or other recreation. At times, suggesting reading material and later discussing that material is best. While there is no one course of action that works best, it is always good to have a plan in place and follow that plan to the best of your ability.

After your plan is in place, remember to check in with the person regularly. Have honest conversations about how things are going and what has been gained from the activity, reading or other conversation, but always strive to remain neutral. You do not want your words to influence the other person’s actions. Being an influence can actually stifle the learning process and inhibit personal growth. Rather, be an open ear and allow the other person to do most of the talking. Encourage the thought process with open ended questions and further activity or reading suggestions. The goal is to empower the individual, and you can do that best by remaining as impartial as possible through the process.

Finally, do not be afraid to refer the person to others for additional help. Sometimes it is difficult to get someone past a particular stumbling block, and this is especially true if you have a close relationship with that person. Referring them to a professional therapist, personal development class or other such resource is sometimes the best way to get the person to move forward. Use these resources when necessary, and do not be afraid to use them for yourself as well if you feel there is benefit.

A personal development mentor is an important person who can significantly impact a person’s life. If you are asked to take on this role, take the challenge seriously and work to empower the individual you are coaching.

Helping others in their quest for self improvement

Oftentimes when we think of personal development, we think of our own personal development. But it can be equally satisfying – and is equally important – to help guide others through the process of self improvement. The role of being a mentor for someone who is embarking on a program of self improvement is an important one!

So, you are going to be someone else’s personal development mentor! This is a challenging and exciting task, and we commend you for taking it on. We are starting, of course, with the assumption that this is something the other person has asked of you – personal development that we try to “force” on others is virtually guaranteed to end in disaster. But if you have agreed to someone’s request to help mentor them through a particular goal or challenge they are facing, you will want to spend some time thinking about your specific role in this process. It can be tempting sometimes to want to jump in and do everything for the other person. This, however, will cause no real growth on their part and you will both likely wind up frustrated with each other. So sit down with them and identify what it is that you can do to help them the most. Will you simply be a person to be accountable to? Will you offer suggestions and advice? What will your exact role in this process be?

You will also want to clarify with them who else will help to support them during this process. Creating lasting change can be difficult, and having as many people on board as possible will be very helpful. Surrounding themselves with a solid support system will likely help set them up to succeed. The old adage that there is strength in numbers is often true – keeping friends and family in the loop about what’s going on can make all the difference in terms of reaching goals.

As a mentor, you must remember that your role, your job, is to offer impartial guidance. Remember this! You will need to remain neutral and not take any progress they make – or fail to make – personally. Taking things personally can quickly lead to you acting in ways you will likely regret and that impede progress.

A big way that you can effectively mentor someone else is to freely share resources that may think are helpful to them, such as books or articles that may strengthen their efforts. If you have not already done so, start amassing a list of literary resources that you can suggest. Many people who work at bookstores and libraries know quite a bit about a lot of topics, so you can always ask them for guidance, as well.

Fulfillment Through Helping Others

In every generation, many have found their greatest personal reward in helping others. This can take many forms. It can be the teacher who opens the door to a lifelong activity or career to others. It can be the EMT who responds to emergency calls and helps others, even saving lives, in his or her community. It can be the volunteer worker who brings meals to elderly shut-ins or provides legal help to the poor. The possibilities are almost endless. You are sure to find a need in your community which you can fulfill, and which will bring you true inner rewards.

A place many people look to volunteer is with those who are dependent and often helpless. Children need mentoring by patient, helpful adults. Seeing their growth and development becomes a reward for you. You are helping form a good future for society.
A similar place to do volunteer work is with animals and abandoned pets. The local SPCA is sure to need volunteers to care for its animals. You may also find an opportunity to care for injured wild animals, nursing them back to health. What a reward, to see an eaglet with a broken wing be able to fly again and live because you have nurtured it!

The elderly are another group often in need of help from volunteer workers. This may be as simple as an hour of companionship each day, or it may require a skilled laborer to fix a leak in the roof or some other task they are unable to do themselves.

When talking with neighbors or friends, be alert to needs they may have but are hesitant to ask for help with. Offer help if it is something you can do. If not, try to find someone else who can do it. Be sensitive to peoples’ pride. Dependency is intimidating. So try to make the person feel at ease about receiving help.

“Charity begins at home,” it is said. Don’t forget your own family’s needs. It is sometimes hard for parents to ask their grown children for help. But you know how much they did for you when you were a child and dependent. Try to be aware of their needs and the tasks they are no longer able to do as they age. You don’t want them going up on the roof themselves to fix a leak!

Teach your children about helping others. Plan to go as a family to help cook and serve a Thanksgiving dinner for the poor, for instance. Groups like the Salvation Army or the Red Cross can always use volunteer help. You may be surprised at how much your children enjoy the experience. You may launch them on a lifelong enjoyment of reaching out to those in need. It may even lead them to a career, such as a social worker or school guidance counselor.

The rewards of helping others are many. One is seeing someone else become better off and feeling their gratitude. Another is that it helps you put your own life in perspective, and makes you grateful for what you have.

Finding Your Path To Personal Development

When considering personal development, the first step is to set a few goals. Setting both long term and short term goals is best. The long term goals will tell you what you are ultimately working toward, and the short term goals will give you some stepping stones to keep you motivated along the way. Make sure your goals are realistic and obtainable or you risk feeling like a failure and losing your motivation. This does not mean goals cannot be challenging, in fact, they should challenge you. Take your time to think through your goal list, and put them down on paper at the beginning of your journey.

After setting goals, it is time to focus on how you plan to get there. Make yourself a road map of sorts that is a commitment to the steps you are willing to take in order to see success in achieving these goals. Make your steps as detailed as possible, and be sure to enlist the help of others when necessary. By having a road map to your dreams laid out, you can clearly see the path you must take and start taking action right away.

Setting up your road map is important, but so is checking in with yourself periodically. Set an appointment on your calendar to spend a little time reflecting on your goals and checking in on your progress. If you find you are struggling with something in particular, take some time to think about why you are struggling so you can modify your plan or change course if necessary. Speaking to a therapist or joining a support group can be helpful when it comes to reflection. Just having someone to bounce your ideas off of makes a world of difference, and it can help to keep you from giving up too soon.

Once you begin to reach some of your goals, take some time to consider how that makes you feel. Reaching a goal should give you a sense of accomplishment and help to motivate you to reach the next goal as well.
